On Tuesday 25th of October Intel CTO Paul Ottelini signed an
agreement with CERN Director General Rolf-Dieter Heuer, extending the collaboration under CERN's openlab project for
another three years. The work will center around cloud
computing and its security aspects, Exascale computing and improvements to datacenter efficiency.
Since joining openlab in 2003, Intel has been part of the "Platform
Competence Center", working on fields such as thermal optimisation,
multi-core scalability, application tuning and benchmarking.
There has also been a strong emphasis on teaching.
In
a press release announcing the signing, Intel Vice President Christian Morales said
“The CERN team is conducting impressive research. We are very
honored being continuously challenged by CERN to improve
performance, energy efficiency and security solutions in our
leading edge products and technologies"
Bob Jones, head of CERN openlab, added: “CERN openlab is a
public-private partnership for multilateral, multi-year projects
between CERN and the IT industry. We are very happy that Intel
confirms its contribution to the CERN openlab for another three
years."
