Details of Fellowship Position

Role Summary

Network Engineer / Developer in the Information Technology Department, Communication Systems Group.

Introduction *:

The Information Technology (IT) Department provides the general computing infrastructure of the Laboratory as well as dedicated services for physicists, engineers, administration and management. The Department also develops and deploys the Grid computing infrastructure for the LHC experiments, leads the large EU-funded EGEE project reaching well beyond particle physics and is involved in several other related projects. IT collaborates closely with industry (through the CERN openlab for DataGrid applications) to develop advanced computing solutions and to enable IT technology transfer in both directions.

To provide its services, the IT Department relies primarily on commercial sources, but develops in-house solutions when otherwise not available.
To maintain the quality of its services, a key strategy of the Department is to develop the technical competence of its staff, recognizing that skill sets must be continuously adapted to a rapidly evolving technological environment.

More information on the Department is at: http://cern.ch/it-dep/

The Communication Systems (CS) Group is in charge of the Networking Infrastructure of the Laboratory (voice, video and data). The CERN Campus network is a very large infrastructure (more than 50’000 connected systems) making use of state of the art technologies. The CS Group is responsible for providing network solutions to a variety of users: desktops, high performance physics computing and the accelerator controls.

Functions *:

In the context of openlab (http://www.cern.ch/openlab ), CERN and HP Procurve (http://www.procurve.com) are launching a 3 year research project which aims to study the Problematic of global deployment of wireless in  large campuses.

Together with a a more experienced engineer, and under the supervision of senior Engineers from CERN and HP Procurve (Québec, Canada), you will contribute to a study on the techniques to ensure the deployment of wireless technologies in large campuses such as CERN. You will work on the implementation of a wireless simulator able to simulate various auto setup algorithms, validate the results on real installations, and collaborate with ProCurve to implement these algorithms into their product lines.

Qualification Requirements: Education *:

University degree or equivalent in Telecommunications, Computer Science or related field.

Experience and Knowledge *:

Experience in 3D graphics and simulation techniques. Understanding of Radio Frequency is a plus.
Excellent knowledge and practical experience in Java. Good knowledge of C++ will be appreciated

Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
Good knowledge of English, basic knowledge of French or an undertaking to acquire it rapidly.

Note on Employment Conditions *:

We offer a fellow position, for a period of three years. Limited-duration contracts shall terminate by default on their date of expiry.

This position may occasionally require work outside of CERN’s normal working hours and could entail stand-by duty.
