CERN openlab Phase I - opencluster: Overview

The openlab constructed a grid enabled compute and storage farm called the opencluster, based on hp's dual processors machines, Intel's Itanium Processor Family processors, Enterasys's 10-Gbps switches and a high-capacity storage system based on IBM's StorageTank system.

hardware

The opencluster was made up of the following hardware:

  • 4 Enterasys Matrix N7 Enterprise switches.

  • 2 Enterasys Matrix X-Series Core Router.

  • 96 HP dual RX2600 servers with ItaniumŪ 2 processors @ 1.5 GHz with 2-12 GB memory.

  • 2 HP quad RX4640 servers with ItaniumŪ 2 processors @ 1.5 GHz with 8-16 GB memory.

  • 1 HP rx7620 server with 8 ItaniumŪ 2 processors @ 1.6 GHz with 8 GB memory.

  • 8 ibm TotalStorage 200i systems (Rack mounted). Each system has 6 internal 73GB SCSI disks plus 3 extension units with 14 73GB SCSI disks each.

  • 1 Voltaire ISR 9096 InfiniBand Switch Router.

In addition we had 3 HP zx2000 workstations with one Itanium 2 processor @ 1.5GHz with 1GB memory and one 36GB SCSI disk. These machines were used as desktops by our staff.

software

The opencluster ran Linux. We continually tested and installed new software components. The base system was:
