A small team of CERN engineers specializes in the numerical computation of fluid dynamics (CFD). Many simulations are being made for the LHC collaboration, allowing improvements to be made to the design. To carry out these calculations extraordinary computing power is needed. The CFD team now has access to 20 dual Itanium 2 machines within the opencluster. The machines are connected via Infiniband and use the message passing interface (MPI). Tremendous speedups with have been obtained with this hardware setup.
